As the year comes to a close, it becomes clear that while an important chapter is closing, the story and legacy of Sessley Building Services is just beginning.
“I’m very happy with all of our current projects, but I’m still focused on helping Sessley Building Services build a legacy that will sustain the company long after I’m gone,” says Robert Sessley Jr.
Part of building that legacy is continuing to focus on achieving important certifications that open doors, which is why he currently has his sights set on Sessley Building Services receiving DBE certification, which would allow Sessley Building Services to compete for federal transportation contracts, including contracts for the much buzzed about John Glenn International Airport in Columbus, Ohio. The $2 billion expansion project provides a myriad of opportunities for Columbus-based construction companies and contractors – and Robert Sessley Jr. wants to make sure Sessley Building Services gets a piece of the pie.
Sessley Jr. says, “I would love for us to get general contracting work for the airport, for a project we could manage the entire scope of from top to bottom, or even a variety of general trades work, made up of many different smaller projects for the airport that we could manage and tie up in a nice little package.
I want to convey to the airport decision-makers that by working with us they are supporting three important goals: They support diverse contractors, they support diversity in the community, and ultimately, they support building diversity in Columbus.”
In addition to John Glenn International Airport, Sessley Jr. is also working hard to make meaningful partnerships with the Ohio Expo Center modernization project and developers in the multi-family residential sector, because he strongly believes such collaborations are crucial to taking the company to the next level.
Another crucial aspect to the success of Sessley Building Services? Maintaining a strong team that is hardworking, dedicated, growing and happy, which also contributes to the types of projects Sessley Jr. would like to secure in the future.
“Moving forward, I also want to find projects that don’t just make a profit, but get my team excited and engaged. A fun project we can all work together on from the ground up. So I’m definitely on the lookout for that.”
When asked what he wants for Sessley Building Services as they move into the next chapter, the answer is exactly what one would expect from a man who has the spirit of an entrepreneur in his DNA.
“I want to continue finding great clients to build relationships with, continue building a team that loves what they do and find smart, creative ways for our company to focus inward in a way that helps us build a profit and create long-term growth.”
As it is, slowing down doesn’t seem to be in the cards any time soon.
According to Sessley Jr., “At some point I may take a break, but not anytime soon. Right now I love what I do and the rush of it all too much for that.”
