MICHAEL BLOOM

PROJECT SUPERINTENDENT

Why or how did you get into construction:

I was initially going to be a teacher out of college. I studied Design and Industry at San Francisco State University, passed the teaching exam and started substitute teaching. However, I could not make enough money to pay my rent and student loan, so I started working construction side jobs with a friend. I was making good money which encouraged me to pursue an apprenticeship. From there, I worked my way up through the carpentry trades which led to where I am today.

What was the most memorable project of your professional career:

While I was a carpenter in San Francisco, I had the opportunity to work on homes for celebrities such as Sharon Stones and Robin Williams. These homes were quite ornate, and those experiences taught me how to pay attention to quality and detail.

The best part of your job:

Solving problems, and that I can be genuine with the people on my team.  When I first started my career, we did not have cell phones, texting or email. We had a handshake, and following through on your word was your reputation. I like to bring someone’s genuineness into a project. The project is far more successful when people are motivated and connected as a team.

What do you like about Central Ohio:

I like the fact that you can buy a house and find a respectable job here. It is generally a very safe community with good schools and opportunities to succeed in life. The first thing I did when I moved here 19 years ago was become a Buckeye Fan!

The best compliment anyone could give you:

Nice work.  That means someone can tell that you care.

Best advice you’ve ever received:

Focus on possibilities.

What’s something you’ve always wanted to do or is on your bucket list:

Buy a boat that I could live on and happily sail wherever I want.
